A rough weekend but we made it to day +11

Olivia has had a pretty rough weekend. She got a fever on Thursday night/Friday early morning and has had it pretty much ever since. When kids here get a fever they immediately draw blood from their "tubbie" to start culturing to see if there is an infection growing. On Friday she also started to get a little bit of a rash that would come and go. They also did a respiratory viral battery (they collected some snot) to see if they could culture that to look for any signs of infection. The doctors were a little bit concerned because Olivia was starting to show signs of engraftment but she was only day +8 and that's a little early for and umbilical cord blood transplant recipient to engraft. They started running a lot of tests to try and rule out any type of infection. They gave Olivia some pain medicine on Friday and that did seem to make her a little more comfortable. On Saturday it became very obvious that Olivia was not feeling very well. She was still running a fever, her rash was getting worse, and she was starting to retain some fluid and actually gained about half a pound overnight. They did a chest x-ray just to make sure that things looked okay. By this time we were starting to get some of the initial results back from all of the cultures and they weren't showing any signs of infection. Olivia's primary doctor, Dr. Paul was on-call this weekend and we're so glad he was here to help us through this rough weekend. They gave Olivia a pain pump so now she's on constant pain medication and that really seems to be helping. Dr. Paul is convinced that Olivia is showing signs of early engrafment (specifically the rash, a runny nose, the fluid retention, fever, increased heart rate and rapid respiratory rate) which is definitely a good thing and sure enough her white blood count is on the rise! Since they are running so many cultures on Olivia they have put us on contact isolation which means that every time we leave our room we have to wear special gowns and gloves and every time the nurses or doctors come in they have to put on the special gowns and gloves. Better safe than sorry but I do hope that we're cleared from contact isolation status soon!

She's starting to engraft but in the mean time she's miserable, covered in a bright red rash and she's very itchy
